INCREASING ATHLETIC POWER FOR VOLLEYBALL

Strength X Quickness = POWER

Strength and quickness are the two most important components of power.

Increasing one while neglecting the other limits total power development.

To make the greatest gains, it’s best to focus on increasing both.

Also, you’ll make faster gains if you figure out which one is the greatest weakness.

COACHING TIPS FOR MORE EFFECTIVE PRACTICES

As a coach, ask yourself...

1. Are you connected?

Before all else, establish the emotional connection.

Don’t: Launch straight into activity.
Do: Make a joke, get personal, tell a story, or ask a question.

2. Are goals ultra-clear?

Practice is about reaching and your players need to know what they’re reaching for. You can’t be too clear.

Don’t: Set unreasonably high goals.
Do: Demonstrate what is trying to be accomplished. Aim for something just beyond the current ability.

3. Are goals reachable?

Do the practice drills keep players on the edge of their ability? Are players making mistakes and fixing them?

Don’t: Celebrate success (it speaks for itself).
Do: Celebrate struggle.
