VOLLEYBALL SKILL-BASED CONDITIONING

Follow the link for my latest page on skill-based conditioning methods for volleyball.

To be successful at competitive volleyball, you need to be quick and explosive. Movements in volleyball involve quick change of direction, quick first step, sprawls, dives, and explosive jumps.

These explosive movements are coupled with short rest periods throughout a volleyball match.

Developing strength and power qualities along with specific metabolic conditioning are important contributors to success in volleyball.

Therefore, the development of these qualities should be the primary focus of physical training for volleyball.

However, most volleyball coaches would agree that the level of volleyball skill, not fitness level, is the most discriminating factor between winning and losing.

More often a team loses because the lack of skill development, not because of the lack of fitness.

Compared to many other team sports, developing techniques for volleyball can often be much more difficult.

For example, forearm passing in volleyball involves arm-eye coordination. This skill is unlike any skill in any other sport.

Most skills in volleyball are very technical, and at a competitive level, it’s the more highly skilled teams that win.

Since performing volleyball skills is so technical, it can take a great deal of time to develop volleyball specific skills.

With this in mind, it's important to get smart about how you spend time training for volleyball.

The following are some important things to consider.

How much time do you spend conditioning?

How much time do you spend developing strength and power qualities?

How much time do you spend training volleyball specific skills?

The method of combining skill development with conditioning is referred to as skill-based conditioning.

This is also known as game-based conditioning.

This is a more efficient type of conditioning that combines physical development along with technical and mental skills.

Most teams enjoy skill-based conditioning because it's a fun way to condition for volleyball.
